3 Ways to Protect the Information in Your Email

There are more hackers online today than ever before. This means that you want to keep your information safe at all times. Unfortunately, we rely heavily on the Internet for most of our business. We pay our bills online, send private messages containing important information and other activities that could put our information at risk. This is why it is important to take all measures of safety possible in order to keep your information out of the wrong hands. Here are some tips you can follow to protect your information in an email.

2-Step Verification

2-step verification can keep your information safe when you need it the most. All it requires is a few extra moments of your time to keep your information secure. Unfortunately, most people would rather not utilizing 2-step verification when they check their emails. This can cost them the safety of their information if they are not careful. Set up a 2-step verification for your email address and follow the steps it provides for you for optimal safety.

Use Code Signing

Using software that requires a digital signature is a guaranteed way to keep your emails safe. Security measures like code signing ensure the safe transfer of sensitive information. Make sure to utilize this in your email whenever sending important documents to high-priority contacts.

Avoid Clicking Suspicious Links and Emails

One of the most common forms of information theft happens whenever you click on a malicious link. There are dozens of scammers out there who send emails that look like they are from legitimate companies you recognize. However, there may be a telltale sign somewhere in the email that reveals that it is not safe. Always educate yourself on the latest emails that are scams to keep your eyes open for potential threats.

Email continues to be one of the most popular forms of communication in the world. It is easy to use and allows us to contact dozens of people at once. However, it is also one of the easiest ways for hackers to breach. This means that we must take the extra steps to secure our information from these people that would do us harm. Take the information provided here and implement it the next time you decide to use your email to prevent a potential information breach.

Slow Internet? 3 Common Causes

internet speedIf you run a small-to-midsize company, then you know that Internet speed can make all the difference in your company’s productivity. When you have slow internet, then your apps work slower than they should. You cannot share files quickly between team members and your customer service members may be choosing to use their own data plans to answer company questions. Video conferencing may experience lags making it harder to keep up with what is going on. While many different factors affect internet speed, these three common causes can be the reason that your company does not have fast internet.

Your Router

If your router is older, then it might be time to invest in a new one. If your internet provider provides the router, then you may want to contact them so that they will send you a new one. New routers often offer additional frequencies helping you from getting bottlenecked when you are trying to operate other items in your business that also use radio frequencies. Many also offer dual bandwidths. You may also want to install a WiFi extender or mesh system if you get better speeds in some parts of your business than in others.

Bandwidth

Think of bandwidth as the size of the pipe and data as the water. The bigger the pipe, the more water is able to flow through it in a certain amount of time; in other words, the bigger the bandwidth, the more available data. Often people think they must make a choice between bandwidth vs. speed. While you may want to contact your internet provider to see if they have a plan offering more bandwidth, there are other steps that you can take in your business. Find out which programs or applications require the most bandwidth and run them after-hours when possible. A wired ethernet connection usually experiences fewer speed issues.

Computer

While the amount of available bandwidth and your router are more important in determining Internet speed, the device that you or your employees use to connect to the Internet can also make a difference. The number and type of processors can make a difference. The amount of RAM available can also make a huge difference when it comes to speed, with PCs usually offering more RAM than Macs. The amount of hard-drive space can also make a difference in speed.

Keeping these factors in mind may increase the internet speed at your business. Then, employees can be more productive throughout the day.

Gather Round, Apple’s 2018 Fall Event

apple fall event

Only a couple more hours until the big Apple Fall event, titled Gather Round. It will be live streamed at that link as well Twitter. The majority of my clients use Windows computers and Apple iPhones so this is fairly interesting to most.

The expected announcements include the release of iOS 12, which I have been using in beta for the past couple of months, as well as watchOS 5. Both updates have a lot of great improvements.

Three new iPhones are expected. An update to the X (pronounced “ten”) will be out as well as a “plus” size version – they will be called the Xs (5.8 inch) and Xs Max (6.5 inch) according to the latest leaks. A third smallish phone, the Xr will be the less expensive version and have a 6.1 inch display.

The new Apple Watch will be slightly bigger. Instead of the 38/42mm sizes they’ll be 40/44mm. Hopefully the old Watch bands still fit.

What’s your niche?

what is your niche?

It’s common knowledge that finding a niche is the best way to market your business. But this is something I’ve struggled with for a long time.

Frankly, just between you and me, most of the businesses that I support all pretty much look the same. They are office environments with one computer per employee. Everyone is using Microsoft Office applications, mostly Word and Excel. They all use email, usually Microsoft Outlook or IBM Notes. The servers look the same – basic file and print. Most small businesses use Quickbooks.

Most businesses also have one or two vertical market software packages too that are specific to their business but those aren’t difficult to deal with either.

So, while it might help my marketing to say that my niche is construction companies, or lawyers, or headhunting firms, or dentists… really, the networks all look virtually the same.

If you are a small to medium sized business with a computer network contact Good Computer Guy today to found out how I can help you out.
